Tamsin Spencer Smith - The Art of San Francisco

Shumit DasGupta

I am a vehicle for emergence. I’m fascinated by how complex systems arise from simple interactions—like a hive from honeybees, or consciousness from neurons. I see this principle everywhere: in tree canopies, braided water rivulets, roller skaters, even the stock market. In my art, I explore emergence through materials and conditions. My media include acrylics, botanicals, resin, watercolors, gravity, climate, and time. I’m drawn to the spaces in between—what happens when pigments roll down a crevice, or when sand, wind, and pigment capture traces of weather? I investigate these intersections both literally and figuratively in the world around me.
